Ikea Hacks: Luxe Lacquer Dresser

This post has been updated with more photos, steps and helpful information! 5/9

Get this luxe look for way less with a good ole' fashioned Ikea hack.  About three months ago when we moved into our new apartment I immediately purchased this basic set of drawers for about $150 -- and painted it YELLOW.  Painting anything high gloss is a major pain in the a$$ but looks far more expensive.  Sanding and repainting is 100% necessary if you're aiming for perfection.  Our dresser sat bare without hardware for another several months until I could hunt down the perfect (and inexpensive) drawer pulls. Ideally I would have purchased 12 gorgeous geode pulls from Anthropologie--BUT WHO HAS THE BANKROLL FOR THAT ANYWAYS. Our drawers now open with ease and the brass pulls add an elegant touch to an otherwise blah piece!

1. After assembling your dresser prime the entire unit to prevent the natural sap in the wood from staining the finish.

2. Brush on a coat of high gloss lacquer paint and let dry completely. Use a 200-grit sandpaper to sand down brush strokes and brush off the residue with a wet rag. Apply a second coat for a flawless finish. Have drips or rough spots? Just wait for the paint to cure completely before sanding down and touching up problem areas.

3. Line your drawers with a fun printed contact paper and install some vintage brass hardware to complete the look!

  1. Hi! Do you mind sharing what paint you used? I have been wanting to paint one of these ikea dressers forever, and this high gloss looks amazing! I didn't realize there were so many options! Spray can or roller/brush? And what brand do you prefer? I am hoping to discover a beautiful shade of green. Thanks for your help!!!

  4. Hi! I came across your post and loved the finished result. Just wondering, but what model of dresser is yours? I can't find anything similar to it on Ikea now. Thanks!

    2. In Germany it is called TARVA. No idea if the name is the same in the US though...
